CMU / Concrete Block

Commercial Masonry Services

CMU block is the backbone of commercial construction in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and Fenimore-Blythe has been installing it since 1945. Our crews handle every CMU application — foundation walls, elevator shafts, fire-rated stairwell enclosures, and full-height structural walls — for healthcare, education, municipal, and commercial clients.

We work with the full range of CMU products: standard gray block for economical structural solutions, split-face and ground-face units for architectural appeal, and burnished block for polished interior applications. Our estimating team coordinates with architects and general contractors to specify the right block type, reinforcement pattern, and grouting requirements for each project. Whether it's a simple partition wall or a fully engineered load-bearing system with reinforced cells and bond beams, we deliver precision workmanship on schedule. CMU also serves as the standard backup wall for brick and natural stone veneer facades.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CMU block construction?
Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are precast concrete blocks used in both load-bearing and non-load-bearing wall systems. CMU construction is one of the most versatile and cost-effective masonry methods for commercial buildings, offering excellent fire resistance, sound attenuation, and structural integrity. Blocks are available in various sizes, with 8x8x16 inches being the most common for commercial applications.
What are the fire ratings for CMU walls?
CMU walls can achieve fire ratings from 1 to 4 hours depending on block thickness, cell grouting, and aggregate type. A standard 8-inch hollow CMU wall typically provides a 2-hour fire rating, while a fully grouted 8-inch wall can achieve 4 hours. These ratings make CMU ideal for fire-rated stairwell enclosures, elevator shafts, and separation walls required by building codes.
What types of CMU finishes are available?
CMU is available in several architectural finishes beyond standard smooth-face gray block. Split-face block has a rough, textured surface created by splitting the block during manufacturing. Ground-face block is polished to expose the aggregate for a terrazzo-like appearance. Burnished block has a smooth, sealed surface suitable for interior applications. All finish types are available in a range of integral colors.
When is CMU preferred over other masonry systems?
CMU is typically preferred when the project requires fire-rated construction, sound attenuation, or load-bearing capacity at a competitive cost. It excels in applications like parking structures, industrial buildings, schools, and healthcare facilities where durability and low maintenance are priorities. CMU also provides an excellent backup system for brick or stone veneer facades.
What is the difference between load-bearing and non-load-bearing CMU?
Load-bearing CMU walls are designed to support structural loads from floors, roofs, or other building elements above. They require engineering calculations, specific reinforcement patterns, and grouted cells. Non-load-bearing CMU walls serve as partitions, enclosures, or backup for veneer systems and do not carry structural loads beyond their own weight. Both types may still require reinforcement for lateral loads or code compliance.
